Collection of Jürgen Blum
Collection of Jürgen Blum
A new permanent exhibition in the spacious pavilions of the Museum of Modern Art, featuring numerous works from the Jürgen Blum Collection, opened in February 2023 – with a new concept and interactive elements. The permanent exhibition is open all year round.
Museum founder Jürgen Blum did not achieve personal wealth during his artistic life – although he undoubtedly could have done so. He usually reinvested his fees and sales in new projects and campaigns. Nevertheless, especially since the founding of the Museum of Modern Art in Hünfeld in 1990, he has assembled an extensive collection of contemporary art that includes works by important artists as well as works by artists who are relatively unknown in Western countries.
He collected these works over many years through personal friendships with numerous artists, joint projects, and exchanges with artists and artist groups. It comprises around 3,000 works of various styles, but mostly works of constructive and concrete art.
Blum did not place any importance on market value in the art scene; what mattered to him was the quality of the works and often also the attitude of the artists behind them. He invited numerous artists to exhibitions and workshops with his painting students, many of whom left behind works that enriched the collection.
In 2006, the city of Hünfeld transferred Jürgen Blum's collection to a foundation. The collection is presented as a permanent exhibition in the museum pavilions of the Museum of Modern Art.
